Study supports the implementation of Beckman Coulter’s MDW in emergency labs as initial test to detect sepsis

Beckman Coulter announced the results of a prospective study carried out across two European hospitals, which found that Monocyte Distribution Width, in combination with White Blood Cell Count with Differential, has the diagnostic accuracy to detect the risk of sepsis and severe infection upon patient presentation in A&E, particularly when assessed in patients with a lower likelihood of sepsis.

Study paves the way for development of novel delivery systems to suppress HIV

In a new study supported by the National Institutes of Health, researchers used exosomes, tiny nanoparticles capable of being taken up by cells, to deliver novel protein into the cells of mice infected with HIV. The protein attached to HIVs' genetic material and prevented it from replicating, resulting in reduced levels of HIV in the bone marrow, spleen, and brain.

This state has come to be known as long-COVID, and in a paper recently uploaded to the preprint server medRxiv* by Simjanoska et al. (September 7th, 2021) the biochemical parameters of long-COVID patients with prior mild, moderate, or severe COVID-19 that resulted in hospitalization are tracked in detail, finding a characteristically dysregulated immune and inflammatory response in the most seriously ill.
