Addition of confocal laser endomicroscopy to HDWLE improves diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus

New research shows that the addition of confocal laser endomicroscopy to high-definition white-light endoscopy enables improved real-time endoscopic diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus dysplasia (neoplastic tissue) by using targeted biopsies of abnormal mucosa to reduce unnecessary mucosal biopsies and potentially reduce costs.

A new study from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden finds that testing for human papilloma virus (HPV) allows for longer time between screening tests when compared to cytology-based testing. The study is published in the scientific journal British Medical Journal (BMJ).

Researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College have shown that the presence of a particular protein in biopsied prostate tissue substantially increases the likelihood that cancer will develop in that organ. BRAF inhibitor vemurafenib effective for patients with papillary thyroid cancer

Mutations in a gene that codes for the enzyme BRAF kinase have been associated with increased risk for papillary thyroid cancer. An early-stage clinical trial of the BRAF inhibitor vemurafenib resulted in either a partial response or stable disease in patients with PTC and BRAF mutations.

Findings suggest BRAF-mutant colon tumor cells may be less sensitive to the effect of aspirin

In 2 large studies, the association between aspirin use and risk of colorectal cancer was affected by mutation of the gene BRAF, with regular aspirin use associated with a lower risk of BRAF-wild-type colorectal cancer but not with risk of BRAF-mutated cancer, findings that suggest that BRAF-mutant colon tumor cells may be less sensitive to the effect of aspirin, according to a study in the June 26 issue of JAMA.

Women can be screened for colorectal cancer later than men undergoing "virtual colonoscopy"

A new study has found that women can be screened for colorectal cancer at least five to 10 years later than men when undergoing an initial "virtual colonoscopy." Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the findings may help establish guidelines for the use of this screening technique, which is less invasive than a traditional colonoscopy.
