Eye-gaze technology opens world of communication for Rett Syndrome children

Special eye-gaze technology now being used in the Department of Neurology at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) is revealing the hidden, inner world of children who have Rett Syndrome, a rare and severe autism spectrum disorder that primarily affects little girls. It is a neurological disease in which mobility and autonomic functions are severely impaired, seizures and orthopedic problems are common, and the children lose functional hand use and the ability to speak.

Celtic, Resolvyx enter option agreement for RX-10045 to treat dry eye syndrome

Celtic Therapeutics Holdings L.P. a successor firm to Celtic Pharma, and Resolvyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Sanofi-aventis commences teriflunomide Phase III study in RMS patients treated with interferon beta

Sanofi-aventis announced today the initiation of a multinational Phase III study evaluating the efficacy and safety of two doses of once daily teriflunomide (7mg or 14mg) versus placebo in patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis (RMS) treated with interferon beta (IFN beta).

Study finds metabolic syndrome may indicate breast cancer risk in post-menopausal women

Metabolic syndrome, associated with the sedentary lifestyle and energy dense diet of Western industrialized societies, may be an indicator of breast cancer risk in post-menopausal women, according to a new study to be released at the National Italian American Foundation event, "Let's Talk About It: A Spotlight on Women's Health" on October 22nd at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.

Potential SIDS cause found

A baffling condition Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) that leads to the unexplained deaths of many infants worldwide may have been explained in new Australian research. The researchers monitored babies as they slept on their bellies and found that they have reduced blood pressure and an increased heart rates, compared with when they slept on their backs as recommended. This effect is seen more in babies aged two to three months, the age when babies are most at risk of SIDS.

Cerenis raises €10 million in second close of Series C financing

Cerenis Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical company specializing in the research and development of novel therapies based on HDL to treat cardiovascular and other metabolic diseases, announced today it has raised a further €10 million in a second close of its Series C financing. This takes the total funds raised in the Series C to €50 million and the total equity investment raised to date by the Company to €117 million.

Eating whole grains and limiting refined grains reduce body fat

People who consume several servings of whole grains per day while limiting daily intake of refined grains appear to have less of a type of fat tissue thought to play a key role in triggering cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, a new study suggests. Researchers at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Researcher Center on Aging (USDA HNRCA) at Tufts University observed lower volumes of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) in people who chose to eat mostly whole grains instead of refined grains.

Study finds adipose dysfunction linked to steatosis, necroinflammation in G1 CHC patients

Researchers at the University of Palermo in Italy provide the evidence that a higher visceral adiposity index score-a new index of adipose dysfunction-has a direct correlation with viral load and is independently associated with both steatosis and necroinflammatory activity in patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C (G1 CHC).
