Clinical trials in a variety of areas within interventional cardiovascular medicine that will be presented at TCT 2010 will directly affect the way that people with cardiovascular disease are treated. Breakthroughs in science and medical research, presented exclusively at TCT, will lead to new treatments that are minimally invasive and involve shorter recovery times. Among the topics being covered are stenting in the femoral artery, polymer-free drug-eluting stents, valves and drug-eluting balloons used in angioplasty.

Two new reports released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that while the United States has made dramatic progress in the fight against tobacco, too many Americans still smoke and too many non-smokers including more than half of all young children are still exposed to secondhand smoke.

Progerin may contribute to risk of atherosclerosis: Study

Progeria, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS), is a rare, fatal genetic disease characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children. All children with Progeria die of the same heart disease that affects millions of normal aging adults (atherosclerosis), but instead of occurring at 60 or 70 years of age, these children may suffer heart attacks and strokes even before age 10, and the average age of death is 13 years.

TenX Biopharma recommences enrollment in suspended Phase III trial for cutaneous T-cell lymphoma

TenX Biopharma, Inc. announced today that it has re-initiated enrollment in the pivotal Phase III clinical trial assessing zanolimumab treatment for cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) patients (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT00127881). The trial enrollment was suspended in October 2008 while Genmab was seeking a out-license agreement to further develop the compound. TenX Biopharma acquired global rights to zanolimumab in February, 2010 from Genmab.

Researchers decode words from brain signals in paralyzed people

In an early step toward letting severely paralyzed people speak with their thoughts, University of Utah researchers translated brain signals into words using two grids of 16 microelectrodes implanted beneath the skull but atop the brain. "We have been able to decode spoken words using only signals from the brain with a device that has promise for long-term use in paralyzed patients who cannot now speak," says Bradley Greger, an assistant professor of bioengineering.
