'Aspartame danger' myths

Heard the one about how aspartame single-handedly caused the Gulf War syndrome? In recent years, outlandish allegations – often spread via the Internet by individuals who have little scientific or medical expertise – have tried to link the low-calorie sweetener to every ailment ranging from Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's disease to cancer and weight gain. However, the overwhelming body of scientific evidence via more than three decades of research and over 200 studies demonstrate that aspartame is safe.

ISWG researchers establish guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of infantile spasms

Researchers from across the U.S., as part of the Infantile Spasms Working Group (ISWG), established guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of infantile spasms (IS). The goal of the ISWG is to improve patient outcomes by creating protocols that educate pediatricians on early diagnosis and treatment options. Full details of this study appear online in Epilepsia, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the International League Against Epilepsy.

Iroko Cardio International Sàrl announces long-term, three-year, mortality data from the Phase III, open label, multi-national study comparing high-dose bolus (HDB) dosing of AGGRASTAT(tirofiban) (25mcg/kg bolus followed by a 0.15mcg/kg/min infusion for 18-24 hours) vs. ReoPro (abciximab) in patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), presented at the 2010 European Society of Cardiology Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden.

Study reveals factors linked to cognitive impairment in Type 2 diabetes

Older adults with diabetes who have high blood pressure, walk slowly or lose their balance, or believe they're in bad health, are significantly more likely to have weaker memory and slower, more rigid cognitive processing than those without these problems, according to a new study published by the American Psychological Association.

XARELTO achieves net clinical benefit in treatment of patients with DVT

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals today announced that XARELTO (rivaroxaban), a novel anti-clotting therapy, achieved improvement in net clinical benefit in a study looking at treatment of patients with deep vein thrombosis. DVT is the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the legs, that partially or totally blocks the flow of blood.

Cellerant Therapeutics signs contract with BARDA to develop CLT-008 therapy for ARS

Cellerant Therapeutics Inc., a biotechnology company developing novel hematopoietic stem cell-based cellular and antibody therapies for blood disorders and cancer, announced today that it has signed a contract valued at up to $153 million over five years with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response of the Department of Health and Human Services, to develop CLT-008, a cellular therapy for the treatment of Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS).

DANPACE trial shows dual chamber pacing decreases atrial fibrillation in sick sinus syndrome

DANPACE, a Danish multicentre randomised trial comparing single lead atrial and dual chamber pacing in patients with sick sinus syndrome, concludes that dual chamber pacing, which was associated with lower rates of atrial fibrillation and re-operation, "should be the preferred pacing mode".

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center has established a new center devoted to research and treatment of pre-leukemia blood disorders. Known as the Myelodysplastic Syndromes Center, it is one of the largest programs of its kind in the nation.

Phase 3 AVERROES trial reveals apixaban effective for atrial fibrillation patients unsuitable for warfarin

The phase 3 AVERROES (Apixaban Versus Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) to Prevent Strokes) trial, designed to show the superiority of apixaban over aspirin for the prevention of stroke or systemic embolism in high-risk atrial fibrillation patients unsuitable for treatment with a vitamin K antagonist (warfarin), was terminated early following a recommendation from the Data Monitoring Committee.

The data monitoring committee of the AVERROES study, seeing overwhelming evidence of the success of apixaban in the prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation who are unsuitable for the conventional treatment of warfarin, has recommended early termination of this study. Study finds cognitive behaviour therapy safe for chronic fatigue syndrome

The aim of this study is to examine the frequency and severity of symptom deterioration during cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Patients receiving CBT do not experience more frequent or more severe symptom deterioration than untreated patients. The reported deterioration during CBT seems to reflect the natural variation in symptoms. Thus, CBT is not only a helpful, but also a safe treatment for CFS.
