Thirteen research projects to explore nondrug approaches to manage pain, other health conditions

Thirteen research projects totaling approximately $21.7 million over 5 years will explore nondrug approaches to managing pain and related health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), drug abuse, and sleep issues. The effort seeks to enhance options for the management of pain and associated problems in U.S. military personnel, veterans, and their families.

Helsinn to present Phase III trial data of anamorelin at ESMO Congress

Helsinn Group, a company focused on building quality cancer care, today announces that Phase III data from the largest trial program of its kind to date in anamorelin, a novel, once-daily ghrelin receptor agonist in development for cancer-anorexia-cachexia (CACS) in non-small cell lung cancer will be presented at the 38th European Society for Medical Oncology Congress in Madrid, Spain, in 2014.

A new study suggests that people who experience migraine in middle age may be more likely to develop Parkinson's disease, or other movement disorders later in life. Those who have migraine with aura may be at double the risk of developing Parkinson's, according to the study published in the September 17, 2014, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Study suggests potential treatment for cardiovascular disease in people with apoE4 gene variant

Researchers at UT-Southwestern Medical Center have found that the most common variant of the circulating protein apolipoprotein E, called apoE3, helps repair the lining of blood vessels. Individuals with another variant, called apoE4, do not get the benefit of this repair, putting them at higher risk for cardiovascular disease.

Migraine in middle age linked to Parkinson's disease

A paper recently published in American Academy of Neurology suggests that migraine in middle age may indicate an increased risk of developing a movement disorder, such as Parkinson’s disease. The study also showed that people who experienced migraine with aura were twice as likely to develop Parkinson’s disease compared with those who did not suffer from headaches.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, federal tax credit subsidies - available for people earning up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level ($95,400 for a family of four) - are helping to make these policies affordable and cushioning the impact of premium increases in some cities (9/14).
