Enrollment complete in Aradigm's inhaled ciprofloxacin Phase 2b study in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis

Aradigm Corporation announced the last patient was enrolled in a Phase 2b study designed to evaluate the Company's inhaled liposomal ciprofloxacin (CFI, ARD-3100) in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (BE), a severe progressive respiratory disease for which there is currently no approved treatment in the U.S.

Anacor enters $30 million loan agreement

Anacor Pharmaceuticals announced today that it has entered into a loan agreement led by Oxford Finance Corporation and partnered with Horizon Technology Finance Corporation to provide up to $30 million in capital. Anacor used $6.6 million to repay the remaining obligations under its loan agreement with Lighthouse Capital Partners and expects to use the remainder of the capital to fund development activities related to AN2690, AN2728 and AN2898.

CHMP recommends approval of Centralized Marketing Authorization for Cinryze

ViroPharma Incorporated today announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use of the European Medicines Agency has adopted a positive opinion at its plenary meeting in March 2011 recommending approval of a Centralized Marketing Authorization for Cinryze (C1 inhibitor [human]) in adults and adolescents with hereditary angioedema for routine prevention, pre-procedure prevention and acute treatment of angioedema attacks.

Scientists devise new strategy to prevent spread of drug-resistant bacteria

A team of scientists from the University of Oxford, U.K. have taken lessons from Adam Smith and Charles Darwin to devise a new strategy that could one day slow, possibly even prevent, the spread of drug-resistant bacteria. In a new research report published in the March 2011 issue of GENETICS, the scientists show that bacterial gene mutations that lead to drug resistance come at a biological cost not borne by nonresistant strains.
