Elotuzumab shows promise in treating multiple myeloma: Study

A drug designed to target cancerous plasma cells appears promising in treating multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. A multi-center study looked at the drug elotuzumab, an antibody which is designed to target CS1, a protein on the surface of malignant plasma cells. The antibody has the potential to attach to malignant plasma cells and eliminates them by an immune mechanism.

Scientists combine two agents to treat patients with multiple myeloma

Scientists from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit presented data showing that by combining two treatment agents in the care of multiple myeloma patients, doctors can use higher dosages of chemotherapy before autologous stem cell transplant while alleviating painful and debilitating side effects like severe oral mucositis (mouth ulcers).

Findings from Abraxis BioScience's phase 3 ABRAXANE trial in patients with NSCLC presented at ASCO

Abraxis BioScience, Inc. announced today that findings from their phase 3 randomized trial of nanoparticle albumin bound driven chemotherapy, nab-paclitaxel (ABRAXANE for Injectable Suspension; paclitaxel albumin protein-bound particles for injectable suspension) plus carboplatin, showed a statistically significant 31 percent improvement in overall response rate when compared with Taxol (paclitaxel) injection plus carboplatin in the first-line treatment of patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

A rare but fatal disease of blood vessels in the lung may be caused in part by aberrant silencing of genes rather than genetic mutation, new research reports. Pulmonary arterial hypertension, a syndrome characterized by gradual blockage of blood vessels in the lungs, has been linked to genetic causes in a small percentage of patients. But University of Chicago researchers have now found that a form of epigenetics - the modification of gene expression - causes the disease in an animal model and could contribute to the disease in humans.

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced updated clinical data from an ongoing Phase 1 study of its investigational pan-BCR-ABL inhibitor, AP24534, in patients with resistant and refractory chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The South-Eastern Sydney Illawarra Health Service claims that the risk of contracting blood borne serious viral infections like HIV and Hepatitis are low among patients who had an endoscopy done at a private Warrawong clinic. This clinic came under into the spotlight after investigations started to detect the cause of illness in nine persons who underwent endoscopy. The facility is at Cowper Street, Warrawong run by Dr Zakaria Lakhany and is presently closed.
