Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, announced today that the investigational, oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban successfully demonstrated non-inferiority compared to the standard of care for the prevention of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with acute symptomatic deep vein thrombosis (DVT), with a comparable safety profile.

Study: IV ibuprofen decreases pain, morphine use in pre and post-operative orthopedic surgery patients

Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc. today announced the publication of new data supporting the safety and efficacy of Caldolor® (ibuprofen) Injection in pre and post-operative orthopedic surgery patients. The study, which was published in the August edition of the peer-reviewed journal Pain Medicine, concludes that IV ibuprofen significantly decreased pain and morphine use when compared with placebo.

Genetic profiling to predict treatment benefits of ACE inhibitor therapy for CAD

The advantages of prescribing angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors for stable coronary artery disease (CAD) may be increased by targeting the therapy to the patients most likely to benefit.Clinical characteristics alone do not allow a reliable identification of these patients, so a research programme was carried out at Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam to develop a genetic profiling model that predicts the treatment benefits of ACE inhibitors and optimises the recommended therapy.

Aspirin and thienopyridine antiplatelet therapy (such as clopidogrel) are standard care in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and even in stable coronary artery disease (CAD) after coronary intervention with stent. However, effective antiplatelet agents are needed which do not increase the risk of bleeding.

Roche's MabThera continues to dwarf recently launched monoclonal antibodies: Report

Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and healthcare issues, finds that, for the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, 41 percent of surveyed European hematologist-oncologists say that the favorable efficacy profile of Roche's MabThera (rituximab) is the most significant driver of their use of this brand, while 26 percent say MabThera's favorable risk-benefit profile is the most significant driver.

Smoked cannabis relieves chronic neuropathic pain

The medicinal use of cannabis has been debated by clinicians, researchers, legislators and the public at large for many years as an alternative to standard pharmaceutical treatments for pain, which may not always be effective and may have unwanted side effects. A new study by McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) and McGill University researchers provides evidence that cannabis may offer relief to patients suffering from chronic neuropathic pain.

Nanotherapeutics, Inc., announced that it has filed an Investigational New Drug (IND) Application with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for NanoDTPA™ an orally administered capsule that is a less invasive treatment alternative to the FDA approved injectable Zn-DTPA (diethylenetriamine pentacetic acid). DTPA is used to remove radioactive compounds from the body to help eliminate the contamination. The NanoDTPA™ capsule is a unique orally-bioavailable fine particle formulation that allows DTPA to be absorbed into the body from the gastrointestinal tract.

Trius commences oral torezolid phosphate Phase 3 clinical study for ABSSSI

Trius Therapeutics, Inc. announced that the first patient has been dosed in its Phase 3 clinical study of the oral dosage form of torezolid phosphate for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI). The double-blind, active control, pivotal study is designed to compare the efficacy and safety of once-daily oral administration of 200 milligrams of torezolid phosphate for six days of treatment with the efficacy and safety of twice-daily oral administration of 600 milligrams of linezolid (Zyvox®) for 10 days of treatment.

ATOLL study favors enoxaparin over UFH for primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention

The international ATOLL study sponsored by the Assistance Publique - Hopitaux de Paris showed that enoxaparin reduced the composite of death, complication of myocardial infraction, procedure failure or major bleeding by 17% in comparison with standard heparin death, recurrent acute coronary syndrome or urgent revascularisation. The results of the ATOLL study were presented at the hotline session of the annual European Cardiology Congress (ESC 2010) in Stockholm, Sweden.
