Bruker to acquire certain product lines of Varian

Varian, Inc. announced today that Bruker Corporation and Agilent Technologies, Inc. have entered into a definitive asset purchase agreement pursuant to which Bruker will acquire certain product lines of Varian. As previously announced, Agilent committed to divest those product lines in connection with obtaining regulatory approval for Agilent's pending acquisition of Varian.

Agilent Technologies Inc. today introduced the 5975T Low Thermal Mass (LTM) Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Detector (GC/MSD), the industry’s first commercial transportable GC/MS system that delivers laboratory-quality analysis. Using proprietary LTM technology, Agilent has developed the 5975T LTM GC/MS to be smaller, more rugged and to consume less power than in-lab GC/MS instruments, yet capable of the same high-quality performance in the field.

Agilent Technologies launches two Greenhouse Gases Analyzers

Agilent Technologies Inc., today announced the availability of two Greenhouse Gases (GHG) Analyzers for simultaneous analysis of methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrous oxide (N2O) in air samples. The analyzers also can be used for soil gas analysis or plant breathing studies, where the samples contain CH4, N2O, and CO2. Both analyzers easily can be expanded to determine sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).

NIOSH awards $1.24 million contract to study effects of roof falls on underground mine ventilation systems

The Virginia Tech mining and minerals engineering department has received a $1.24 million, five-year contract by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to study the effects of roof falls, bumps, or explosions on underground mine ventilation systems.

Do omega-3 fatty acids prevent depression in coronary heart disease?

Depression is an established risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) in healthy patients and for adverse cardiovascular outcomes in patients with existing CHD. Carbon nanotubes detect lung cancer markers in the breath

Using an array of nanotube devices, each coated with a different organic material, researchers at the Israel Institute of Technology have developed diagnostic system that may be able to diagnose lung cancer simply by sampling a patient's breath. The results of this study, which was led by Hossam Haick, Ph.D., appear in the journal Nano Letters.

Skin odors used to detect basal cell carcinoma

According to new research from the Monell Center, odors from skin can be used to identify basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer. The findings, presented at the 236th meeting of the American Chemical Society, may open doors to development of new methods to detect basal cell carcinoma and other forms of skin cancer.

"Farm-raised tilapia, one of the most highly consumed fish in America, has very low levels of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and, perhaps worse, very high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, according to new research from Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
