MMRC initiates Phase Ib/II study of Treanda in combination with Revlimid and dexamethasone

The Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium (MMRC) today announced the initiation of a Phase Ib/II study of bendamustine (Treanda®), an anticancer agent currently approved for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), in combination with lenalidomide (Revlimid®) and dexamethasone in patients with relapsed multiple myeloma. The trial, led by Shaji Kumar, MD, of Mayo Clinic, is open for enrollment at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.), City of Hope Cancer Center (Duarte, Calif.) and the University of Chicago (Chicago, Ill).

Alpha cells in pancreas can convert into insulin-producing beta cells: Study

Alpha cells in the pancreas, which do not produce insulin, can convert into insulin-producing beta cells, advancing the prospect of regenerating beta cells as a cure for type 1 diabetes. The findings come from a study at the University of Geneva, co-funded by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, that is published today in the online edition of the scientific journal Nature.

Scientists have identified a potential new approach to treat human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), commonly known as sleeping sickness, which afflicts "tens of thousands of people in sub-Saharan Africa" annually, IRIN reports. Some time mid last year six breast cancer patients sued reputed Myriad Genetics, a company that holds patent of two vital genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 that play a role in increasing the risk of breast and ovarian cancers. The fees that the company charges for these genetic tests is a whopping $3,000 which these women claim they cannot afford and the most important of all these women cannot get a second opinion regarding the tests since no one else does them.
