Kansas has updated its roster of disabled residents who have requested state-funded, in-home medical care and is now better equipped to provide that care more quickly and efficiently, officials in the governor's office said Monday. The waiting list was cut by more than a third, from 3,423 to 2,197 people, after a company hired by the state spent the last few months trying to reach out to those on the lists, Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer and Aging and Disability Services Secretary Shawn Sullivan said.

Mayo Clinic and collaborators to test new ways to provide specialized TBI care

For people who are hospitalized for traumatic brain injury, recovery may involve physical and cognitive problems that linger for years. The road back to health can be even more arduous for those who live in remote rural areas and don't have access to brain rehabilitation specialists. Mayo Clinic and collaborators, have received a $2.2 million federal grant to test new ways to provide specialized TBI care, with a focus on reaching rural areas and underserved urban populations.

USAID to triple financial support for PAHO/WHO Regional TB Program

According to a Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and WHO joint press release, USAID "has tripled its financial support for the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Regional Tuberculosis Program, which seeks to prevent 15,000 deaths from tuberculosis in Latin America and the Caribbean over the next five years and reduce the incidence of this disease."

"Health experts and policymakers will urge a U.N. resolution on universal health coverage (UHC), making transformation of health systems a global political goal in the post-2015 development agenda, Judith Rodin, president of the Rockefeller Foundation, said on Thursday" at the Second Global Symposium on Health Systems Research held in Beijing, China, Live Mint reports, noting, "UHC is aimed at providing health care and financial risk protection to all citizens."

Focus on GHI principles necessary to ensure success of U.S. global health programs

Noting that the Global Health Initiative (GHI) leadership and the three core entities of GHI -- USAID, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and PEPFAR -- announced the closure of the GHI office and an end to the initiative's current phase on July 3, Serra Sippel, president of the Center for Health and Gender Equity, writes in the Huffington Post's "Politics" blog that "the three agencies will be responsible for ensuring that the GHI principles are implemented in the field to achieve global health goals."

Informatics is integral to solving the nation's urgent healthcare issues of rising costs and the delivery of quality care. Training the next generation of professionals to develop, implement and research new informatics technologies is vital. The state is inviting public comment on how dentists fit with reforms of the Oregon Health Plan. Last week, two lawmakers and a dental executive submitted a petition to the Oregon Health Authority asking that dental care remain separate until 2017 from the state's new coordinated care organizations (CCOs), provider networks set up to integrate services, manage spending and reward prevention in the care of low-income members of the Medicaid-funded system.
