Two leading health systems announce plan to merge

Trinity Health and Catholic Health East plan to consolidate operations. Together, the two systems will span 21 states and include more than 70 hospitals.

The boards of two leading Catholic health systems, Trinity Health and Catholic Health East, have announced plans to join forces in 2013. The consolidated Catholic health system would include 82 hospitals and 89 continuing care facilities, home health and hospice programs. The two health systems together have nearly 2.8 million visits each year across 21 states. They employ more than 87,000 employees, including 4,100 doctors (Gold, 10/17).

Trinity Health and Catholic Health East today announced plans to consolidate operations, which together span 21 states and include more than 70 hospitals. The parties expect to finalize the deal by the spring and financial terms weren't disclosed in a news release. Joseph Swedish, president and CEO of Novi, Mich.-based Trinity would become the president and CEO of the new and unnamed organization. Judith Persichilli, president and CEO of Newtown Square, Pa.-based CHE, would serve as the new organization's executive vice president (Selvam, 10/17).

Modern Healthcare: Aetna, Cigna Announce Accountable Care Initiatives
Two major insurers separately announced new accountable care initiatives. Aetna said it entered into a risk-sharing accountable care contract with PrimeCare Medical Network, a group of independent physician organizations in California. Meanwhile, Cigna Corp. has added nine new ACOs and expanded its accountable care efforts into Nevada and Oregon. Cigna's total ACO count now stands at 42. Cigna's latest accountable care organizations include partnerships with Banner Health Network, Phoenix; Brown & Toland Physicians, San Francisco; the Integrated Physician Network, Louisville, Colo., and MedSouth, Littleton, Colo.; New Haven (Conn.)
