Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and Pfizer Inc. today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has accepted for review a Supplemental New Drug Application for Eliquis (apixaban), for the prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis, which may lead to pulmonary embolism, in adult patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery.

Two studies shed light on joint replacement outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis patients

Two new studies by researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery have shed light on joint replacement outcomes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. One study overturns the common belief that RA patients have worse outcomes after a total knee replacement than patients who undergo the operation for osteoarthritis. The other study demonstrates that RA patients who undergo a total hip replacement were as likely to have significant improvements in function and pain as patients with osteoarthritis, even though they did not do as well.

The study, which appears in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, demonstrates that MRI can be used to identify implants that are going to fail before people become symptomatic.
