CHMP adopts positive opinion on pending MAA for SYCREST sublingual tablets

Merck announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use adopted a positive opinion on the pending Marketing Authorization Application for SYCREST (asenapine) sublingual tablets. The CHMP has recommended that the European Commission grant a marketing authorization for SYCREST for the treatment of moderate to severe manic episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults. The CHMP did not support an indication for the treatment of schizophrenia.

FDA approves Lupin Pharmaceuticals' Imipramine Pamoate capsules

Lupin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (LPI) announced today that it has received final approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Imipramine Pamoate capsules, 75 mg, 100 mg, 125 mg and 150 mg strengths. Commercial shipments of the product have already commenced.

USPTO allows Pisgah Labs' patent application regarding imipramine pamoate

Pisgah Labs, a drug product development company and an active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturer (API) located in western North Carolina, has received a patent allowance in a series of patent applications. The US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) has notified Pisgah Labs, Inc. that a patent application related to a therapeutically significant family of pharmaceutical polymorphic compositions of imipramine pamoate has been allowed. The patent application also includes methods of manufacturing, purifying and use in pharmaceutical preparations.

Study looks at imipramine in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome

IBS remains a common intestinal disorder causing significant discomfort and poor quality of life in patients who have the diagnosis. TCAs have been shown to improve abdominal pain in patients with IBS; however, there is insufficient evidence of global symptom relief. The search for an optimal treatment to improve symptoms and quality of life in IBS remains ongoing.

New antidepressants might be no more effective than the best existing drugs

The reviews suggest that sertraline - sold under the brand name Zoloft since 1991- could be the best initial choice of antidepressant in people with acute major depression. The generic formulation produced the best balance of effectiveness, tolerability and purchase price, the authors say.
