Decision Resources forecasts sales of Rituxan/MabThera, Erbitux and Herceptin

Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and healthcare issues, forecasts that U.S. and European (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and U.K.) sales of Roche/Biogen Idec's Rituxan/MabThera, Bristol-Myers Squibb/Merck's Erbitux and Roche's Herceptin will peak at almost $16 billion in 2014, before falling to roughly $10 billion in 2018.

Precise T cell correlates of protection need to be identified for vaccine design

T cells are key players in the immune response to HIV, which are able to delete infected cells. This capacity is used for vaccine development against HIV. "To date however, success of this strategy remains elusive. Our understanding of T cell efficacy is still limited, and we need to identify precise T cell correlates of protection that could guide rationale vaccine design", says Victor Appay, Group leader HIV Pathogenesis and Immunosenescence, Hopital Pitie-Salpetriere, Paris, at the 2nd European Congress of Immunology ECI 2009 in Berlin.

NCI-funded SPORE grant aims to improve kidney cancer treatment

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has awarded Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) an $11.5 million, five-year SPORE grant to focus on cancers of the kidney. Michael Atkins, MD, Deputy Director of BIDMC's Division of Hematology/Oncology, will oversee the grant, which involves collaborations with Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Massachusetts General Hospital via the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center.

Merck Sharp & Dohme Limited (MSD) announced today that ISENTRESS® (raltegravir) has been granted an expanded licence from the European Union Commission (Commission) for use in combination with other antiretroviral (ARV) medicinal products for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adult patients, including adult patients starting HIV-1 therapy for the first time (treatment-naïve), as well as treatment-experienced adult patients.
