FDA accepts ZIOPHARM's IND for ZIN ATI-001 to treat melanoma

ZIOPHARM Oncology, Inc., a drug development company employing small molecule and synthetic biology approaches to cancer therapy, announced today that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration has accepted the Company's investigational new drug application to begin clinical study of ZIN ATI-001, a novel DNA-based therapeutic candidate also known as Ad-RTS-IL-12 + AL, in oncology.

Initial positive results from ZIOPHARM's ZIN-CTI-001 Phase Ib study against advanced melanoma

ZIOPHARM Oncology, Inc. announced today that Douglas J. Schwartzentruber, MD, FACS, of the Indiana University Health Goshen Center for Cancer Care, presented initial positive clinical results from the first-ever treatment demonstrating control over transgene encoding of a therapeutic anticancer protein in humans using a small molecule activator ligand.

Gout drug success for Novartis

Novartis AG's new gout therapy drug gives patients better pain relief and significantly cuts the risk of new attacks say two late stage studies. The studies show that more than 450 patients taking Ilaris, or ACZ885, had less pain and the risk of new attacks were reduced by up to 68 percent compared to those taking an injectable steroid to treat gouty arthritis attacks, which can last for a week or more.

Novartis announced results of two pivotal Phase III trials in patients with severe gouty arthritis, showing that ACZ885 provided superior pain relief and reduced the risk of suffering new attacks by up to 68% compared to an injectable steroid used to treat gouty arthritis attacks.

Researchers with UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have discovered a way to amp up the power of killer T-cells, called CD8 cells, making them more functional for longer periods of time and boosting their ability to multiply and expand within the body to fight melanoma, a new study has found.

New Crohn’s disease therapy on its way

In a new study on a drug called Stelara (ustekinumab) it was seen that 40% patients with moderate to severe Crohn's disease responded. Stelara, which is already approved to treat psoriasis, is a human interleukin (IL)-12 and IL-23 antagonist marketed by Centocor Ortho Biotech Inc. The study findings were presented at Digestive Disease Week 2011.
