LASIK eye surgery is a popular elective procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses, and some of your patients may be asking you about the procedure. LASIK surgery corrects refractive errors in the eye by reshaping the cornea. Using an excimer laser, precise amounts of corneal tissue are removed, and this changes its focusing power. Here's how the procedure is done. A microkeratome is used to cut a flap in the cornea, with a hinge left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back revealing the stroma - the middlesection of the cornea. Pulses from a computer-controlled laser vaporize a portion of the stroma and the flap is replaced.

Confusion over Lasik eye surgery terminology

The Eye Surgery Education Council of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Foundation today issued a clarification on the use of the terms "wavefront-guided," and "wavefront-optimized" in connection with laser-based procedures (LASIK, PRK, etc.) and implantable lenses used for vision correction purposes.

Using an advanced microsurgical technology, called Aqualase(R), a New York eye surgeon is now able to use a procedure to essentially "wash" cataracts away.
