Patel verdict “grossly inadequate”

Many including Queensland MP Rob Messenger, feel that the seven year sentence awarded to Dr. Jayant Patel by the Brisbane's Supreme Court yesterday is “grossly inadequate.” Patel was being tried for three cases of manslaughter and one case of grievous bodily injury during his tenure as Director of Surgery at Bundaberg Base hospital between 2003 and 2005.

David Gray was administered an accidental overdose of a painkilling drug by a GP in 2008. His family have recently been awarded 40,000 pounds sterling in compensation.

Survivors of medical malpractice oppose additional "tort reforms" in health insurance reform bill

A group of medical malpractice survivors, many with family members who have died or were severely injured as a result of medical negligence, today sent letters to President Obama and the Congressional leadership urging them to keep additional "tort reforms" out of the health insurance reform bill. They said that responding to pressure from the insurance and medical lobbies to limit patients' legal rights would be a "tragic mistake."

Medical negligence: $22.3M for loss of left leg

A Cook County jury late yesterday awarded the parents of a now ten-year-old boy with a $22.3 million verdict in a medical negligence case arising out of the care and treatment on May 29, 1999 at Advocate Christ Medical Center/Hope Children's Hospital, in the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn, which resulted in the loss of the boy's left leg.

Blankenships receive $6 million compensation for infant son's death due to medical negligence

A couple who alleged that Saint Louis University failed to diagnose and treat a bacterial infection that led to their 6-month-old son’s death were awarded $6 million by a St. Louis jury on Aug. 17. The parents were represented by attorneys David M. Zevan and Kevin J. Davidson of St. Louis-based Zevan & Davidson.

GOP version of reform bill offers tax credits, doesn't require coverage

House Republicans Wednesday unveiled their version of health reform legislation. It offers tax credits to help people buy insurance and doesn't require individuals or businesses to carry coverage, The Associated Press reports. The plan costs $700 billion, less than current Democratic proposals in Congress.
