Response of New York City public school children to 9/11

Six months after the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, a high proportion of New York City school children had one or more probable anxiety/depressive disorders, according to an article in the May issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Why people get drowsy and fall asleep, and how caffeine blocks that process

When cells in a certain part of the brain become overworked, a compound in the brain kicks in, telling them to shut down. This causes people to become drowsy and fall asleep. Alter that natural process by adding coffee or tea, and the brain compound – called adenosine – is blocked, and people stay awake.

Teens feel most stress before HIV-infected parent dies

A UCLA AIDS Institute study has discovered that teens of HIV-infected parents are at the highest risk for depression and self-destructive behavior before their parent's death, not after. Published in the April issue of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, the findings emphasize the importance of providing support services to HIV-affected families promptly after a parent's diagnosis and through the subsequent illness — not only after the parent's death.

Naltrexone combined with psychotherapy helps treat alcohol dependence

Long-acting injections of the drug naltrexone, combined with psychotherapy, significantly reduced heavy drinking in patients being treated for alcohol dependence, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association by a Yale School of Medicine researcher.

New antipsychotic drug prevents brain loss in schizophrenia

A new brain imaging study of recently diagnosed schizophrenia patients has found, for the first time, that the loss of gray matter typically experienced by patients can be prevented by one of the new atypical antipsychotic drugs, olanzapine, but not by haloperidol, an older, conventional drug.
