MUSC enrolls first patient in the Stroke Treatment And Revascularization Therapy trial

The Stroke Team at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC, including Aquilla Turk, DO, Associate Professor of Radiology, M. Imran Chaudry, MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology, and Raymond D. Turner IV, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiology, enrolled the first patient in the Stroke Treatment And Revascularization Therapy (START) trial.

Specialists unanimously agree needle biopsy as 'best practice' for breast cancer diagnosis

A special report published in the October issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons indicates that an alarming 35% of initial diagnostic breast biopsies in the United States are still being done using unnecessary open surgical techniques. This in spite of the fact that it costs as much as three times more than the much less invasive and equally accurate needle biopsy technique.

Uterine artery embolization proves to be better than laparoscopic occlusion of uterine arteries in treating fibroids

BioSphere Medical, Inc. – the pioneer in the use of bioengineered microspheres to treat uterine fibroids, hypervascularized tumors and vascular malformations by a minimally invasive, image-guided medical procedure called embolotherapy – reports the publication of a study in the October 2009 issue of the Journal of Vascular Interventional Radiology in which the authors conclude that uterine artery embolization (UAE) compares favorably to laparoscopic occlusion of uterine arteries in the treatment of uterine leiomyomas (fibroids) in cases where hysterectomy or myomectomy are not options.
