Doctors at Beaumont Hospital, Troy have performed Michigan's first minimally invasive robotic procedure to correct atrial fibrillation, a prevalent and growing heart rhythm disorder. The new robotic maze procedure is an alternative to open-heart surgery. It's performed through tiny, keyhole incisions with fewer complications and a shorter hospital stay.

Scientists receive HHS grant to investigate DSC127 in treatment of skin injuries linked with radiation exposure

Derma Sciences, Inc., a medical device and pharmaceutical company focused on advanced wound care, today announced that researchers who invented DSC127 have been awarded a $4.5 million, 16-month grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority to investigate preclinically the use of DSC127 in the treatment of skin injuries associated with acute radiation exposure.

New replacement valve can help patients to avoid multiple open-heart surgeries

Congenital heart defects are the most common type of major birth defects in the U.S., affecting about 34,000 babies each year. Twenty percent of these patients are born with a malformation of the pulmonary valve, which is a flap-like opening on the right side of the heart that is responsible for regulating the blood flow to the lungs. FDA reports possible association between breast implants, ALCL

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported on January 26 that "a possible association between saline and silicone gel-filled breast implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma, a very rare type of cancer. Data reviewed by the FDA suggests that patients with breast implants may have a very small, but significant risk, of ALCL in the scar capsule adjacent to the implant.
