Ultrasound is a procedure in which high-energy sound waves are bounced off internal tissues or organs and make echoes. The echo patterns are shown on the screen of an ultrasound machine, forming a picture of body tissues called a sonogram. Also called ultrasonography.

GE Healthcare creates a digital wall to commemorate the tenth anniversary of digital mammography

In addition to being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this October is the tenth anniversary of digital mammography, a technology introduced by GE Healthcare (NYSE:GE) in 1999. Similar to digital photography, digital mammography replaces the film used in traditional mammography with digital files viewed and stored on computers.

Melanoma patients could be spared from unnecessary surgery

Researchers have shown for the first time that patterns of ultrasound signals can be used to identify whether or not cancer has started to spread in melanoma patients, and to what extent. The discovery enables doctors to decide on how much surgery, if any, is required and to predict the patient's probable survival.

XRCMI's rapid results imaging tests program

XRC Medical Imaging (XRCMI) has announced a new rapid results program offering feedback directly to patients regarding their imaging tests within 24 hours of their appointments. XRCMI Medical Director Vu Nguyen, M.D., noted that in many cases, patients will actually get their test results before they leave from their appointment. Tests in the rapid results program include diagnostic mammograms, general X-rays and bone density tests, as well as CT and ultrasound scans.

New sirolimus-eluting stent shows greater neointimal suppression than PES

A new type of sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) successfully showed significantly greater neointimal suppression than the paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES) with greater vessel wall integrity surrounding the stent, confirming the finding of superiority of the SES over the PES stent for the trial's primary endpoint of in-stent late loss.
