Vuvuzela unhealthy in more ways than one: Study

According to health experts, Vuvuzelas - the horns used by football fans celebrating last year's World Cup - not only cause noise pollution but may also spread diseases. According to a new study published in PLoS One journal it is seen that a short burst on the instrument creates a spittle shower similar to a sneeze, travelling at a four million droplets a second. Authors write that in crowded venues one person blowing a Vuvuzela could infect many others with airborne illness like the flu or TB.

Small pox virus destruction pushed back to 2014

The last existing vials of smallpox virus in the U.S. and Russia and due for destruction, have won at least another three years in existence. This is suggesting other countries concur with the U.S. about their value, one leading health official said. The experts and delegates at the annual meeting of the World Health Organization agreed on Tuesday to wait until 2014 to decide on a firm deadline for the final destruction of the lethal virus.

A report from the Organization for Economic Co–operation and Development (OECD) has shown that long term care costs are set to double by 2050 thanks to an ageing population. It shows that even those on above–average incomes could spend 60% of their disposable income on care costs. By 2050, the UK will spend more than a fifth of its entire national output on services for the elderly.

Fibre rich diet and healthy lifestyle prevents bowel cancer

According to leading researchers there is more evidence than ever before that fiber-rich foods prevent bowel cancer. They analyzed the most up-to-date research on the disease and said there is now “convincing” evidence that foods containing fiber can offer protection. An earlier 2007 concluded that dietary fiber “probably” cuts the risk of the disease but this new analysis is stronger they say. New evidence includes research that says three servings a day of cereal fiber and whole grains reduce the risk.

Nerve stimulation device approved for pain

The Medtronic Inc. has won the CE Mark approval for a peripheral nerve stimulation device for treating chronic back pain. This medical device maker from Minneapolis, Minn. said the implantable device will fit into its neurostimulation business, which operates out of the company's restorative therapies division. That unit was responsible for about $5.42 billion in sales during the nine-month period ended Jan. 28.

PH-10, an aqueous hydrogel formulation of Rose Bengal disodium for topical administration to the skin, is being studied for the treatment of cutaneous skin disorders, specifically psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
