Altor receives NHLBI SBIR grant to complete ALT-836 second Phase 2 trial in ALI/ARDS

Altor BioScience Corporation announced today that the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute has awarded Altor a Small Business Innovation Research Phase II Competing Renewal Grant. The award of over $3.18 MM over three years will support Altor's efforts to complete a second Phase 2 clinical trial using ALT-836, an antibody-based tissue factor antagonist, as a therapy to treat patients with infection-induced acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome.

University of Louisville researchers have replicated the inflammatory gene changes of a human kidney as it progresses from mild to severe diabetic nephropathy, using a mouse model developed by a UofL researcher, according to an article published today in the journal Experimental Nephrology. Diabetic nephropathy is the foremost cause of kidney failure.

Caffeine reduces muscle activity in the Fallopian tubes that carry eggs from a woman's ovaries to her womb. "Our experiments were conducted in mice, but this finding goes a long way towards explaining why drinking caffeinated drinks can reduce a woman's chance of becoming pregnant," says Professor Sean Ward from the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno, USA. Ward's study is published today in the British Journal of Pharmacology

The identification and characterization of this virus gives scientists new insights into how hepatitis C in humans may have evolved and provides scientists renewed hope to develop a model system to study how it causes disease.

Inter Press Service looks at the roll out of the Affordable Medicines Facility-malaria in Kenya. The program, which is managed by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, makes subsidized malaria medications available through private pharmacies in seven other pilot countries - Cambodia, Ghana, Madagascar, Niger, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda.

The Pakistani province of Punjab will stop accepting U.S. aid and has canceled six agreements with the U.S. pertaining to health, education and solid waste management, according to Shahbaz Sharif, chief minister of the province, Inter Press Service reports. "Sharif has vowed to 'break the begging bowl' which he said undermines Pakistan's sovereignty," the news service writes.

Inotuzumab ozogamicin achieves over 50% response rate against acute lymphoblastic leukemia

An antibody packaged with a potent chemotherapy drug to selectively destroy acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells eradicated or greatly reduced the disease for 61 percent of 46 patients in a phase II study. It will be presented at the 47th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago June 3-7.
