KKR affiliate to acquire Pfizer's Capsugel business

Pfizer and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co L.P. (together with its affiliates, "KKR") today announced they have entered into an agreement whereby an affiliate of KKR will acquire Pfizer's Capsugel business for $2.375 billion in cash. Capsugel, the world leader in hard capsules and an innovator in drug-delivery systems, generated approximately $750 million in revenue and manufactured more than 180 billion hard capsules in 2010.

Mylan receives FDA approval for generic Xalatan Ophthalmic Solution

Mylan Inc. today announced that its subsidiary Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. has received final approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Latanoprost Ophthalmic Solution, 0.005%, the generic version of Pharmacia and Upjohn's Xalatan® Ophthalmic Solution, an eyedrop that lowers pressure in the eye.

People with lung cancer more likely to have high-risk forms of HPV antibodies

Researchers with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have found that people with lung cancer were significantly more likely to have several high-risk forms of human papillomavirus (HPV) antibodies compared to those who did not have lung cancer. These results, which were presented at the AACR 102nd Annual Meeting 2011, held April 2-6, indicate that HPV antibodies are substantially increased in people with lung cancer.

Avanir files IND for NUEDEXTA/AVP-923 Phase II clinical trial for central neuropathic pain in MS patients

Avanir Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it has filed an Investigational New Drug (IND) application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin a large Phase II clinical trial of AVP-923, an investigational drug for the treatment of central neuropathic pain in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). The FDA has acknowledged receipt of the submission and the company expects that the IND filing will be subject to standard 30-day review.
