Non-invasive blood glucose monitor closer to market

People with diabetes could soon have a pain-free way to check their blood glucose levels. Researchers at the University of Missouri–St. Louis have developed a portable, inexpensive non-invasive blood glucose detector. The university has licensed patent rights for the device to St. Louis Medical Devices, Inc., a Missouri company headquartered at UMSL’s own startup company incubator – IT Enterprises, to bring the device to market.

Radiation oncologists head to Capitol Hill to promote critical initiatives

More than 100 radiation oncology treatment team members and resident physicians convened in Washington Monday and Tuesday to represent radiation oncology on Capitol Hill at the American Society for Radiation Oncology's (ASTRO) eighth annual Advocacy Day. Participants spent Monday hearing from members of Congress and key congressional staff on the latest legislative activity and ASTRO'’s legislative agenda. On Tuesday, the group headed to House and Senate office buildings to meet with senators, congressmen and staffers from their home states to promote agenda items important to the safety and well-being of cancer patients.

Singing reduces blood pressure prior to total knee replacement surgery

Doctors report that singing reduced the blood pressure of a 76-year-old woman who had experienced severe preoperative hypertension prior to total knee replacement surgery for osteoarthritis (OA). While the patient was unresponsive to aggressive pharmacologic interventions, the woman's blood pressure dropped dramatically when she sang several religious songs.
