Walking on water using water balls poses risks of suffocation and drowning, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Thursday. Water walking balls are large clear plastic balls filled with air via a blower through a zipper opening. The zipper is then closed and the ball becomes air-tight, allowing the person in the ball to move across water, ice or grass.

Biota wins U.S. drug development contract for Laninamivir

Australian biotechnology company Biota Holdings revealed its US subsidiary has won a five year $US231 million ($A224.36 million) contract from the US government to develop a long-acting, single-dose flu drug for sale in the US. Shares in the Melbourne-based drug development company jumped 60 cents, or 57%, to $1.60 at the market open today falling back to $1.43, 1pm (AEST).

Post-sex blues in nearly 10% of women: Study

A new study suggests that many women do feel depressed after sex. The study involved more than 200 young Australian women who were questioned about their sex lives. At least one in three young women said they experienced post-coital blues at some point in their lives. Ten per cent said they frequently or almost always felt sad after making love. The study was published in the quarterly International Journal of Sexual Health.

Northern Territory will soon see tough alcohol regulations

Residents of Australia’s Northern Territory have been plagued by alcohol related crimes and have urged the government to come to their aid. Drink-related social problems in the ‘Red Centre’ have even led federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to call for a second federal intervention in towns such as Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine.

Sequential treatment with Entecavir and Lamivudine results in rebound of hepatitis B virus

A two-year trial of entecavir followed by lamivudine (LAM) in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection resulted in a virologic rebound rate of 24% and 12% drug-resistance rate. Patients who continued on entecavir therapy throughout the study period had undetectable HBV DNA at the two-year endpoint. Details of this trial are published in the April issue of Hepatology, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases..

Catheter-related bloodstream infections in children

Hospitals can reduce the risk of life-threatening bloodstream infections in children with peripherally inserted central venous catheters by assessing daily the patient’s progress and removing the device as early as possible, according to a new Johns Hopkins Children’s Center study published online March 31 in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
