As Lori Gooding, University of Kentucky's music therapy director, walks into Joshua Diven's patient room at Kentucky Children's Hospital (KCH), the 3-year-old's face lights up. This is the second time that Gooding and Shane Swezey, a music therapy intern, have visited Diven in the past four days. Gooding has also worked with Joshua on previous visits to KCH.

Northstar Healthcare acquires ownership interests in Texas based radiation therapy cancer treatment centers

Northstar Healthcare Inc. today announced that it entered into an agreement to acquire certain ownership interests in four physician owned radiation therapy cancer treatment centers from Dr. Chris Phan, a radiation oncologist. Study examines racial differences between obesity and vitamin D among children

A recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that while black and white children with vitamin D deficiency both had higher fat levels, black children were more likely to have higher levels of fat just under their skin and white children were more likely to have higher levels of fat between their internal organs.

Novo Nordisk first quarter net profit increases 23% to DKK 4,073 million

Novo Nordisk has completed a pre-specified meta-analysis based on the Degludec phase 3a trial programme. The meta-analysis confirmed that Degludec is associated with a lower risk of hypoglycaemia compared to insulin glargine, both on the total number of confirmed hypoglycaemic events, and on the number of confirmed nocturnal hypoglycaemic events. Both findings are statistically significant.

Early diagnostic tool for joint replacement implant failure

A new test shows promise for detecting the early stages of a major cause of failure in joint replacement implants, so that patients can be treated and perhaps avoid additional surgery. More than 1.5 million total joint replacement operations are performed worldwide each year. While the success rate is 90 per cent, almost 10 per cent of implants fail and require additional surgery, report appears in the ACS journal Molecular Pharmaceutics.

Vitamin E effective against severe fatty liver disease in some children

A specific form of vitamin E improved the most severe form of fatty liver disease in some children, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Results appear in the April 27 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. A previous study found vitamin E effective in some adults with the disease.
