NASA certifies Superfocus glasses for astronauts with presbyopia

Superfocus LLC, creators of Superfocus glasses (formerly known as TruFocals) the first adjustable-focus eyeglasses to treat presbyopia, announced today the flight certification of Superfocus by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for use by astronauts on Discovery's final spaceflight (STS-133) and aboard the International Space Station.

Enrollment commences in NORDIC implantable cardioverter defibrillator clinical trial

BIOTRONIK SE & Co. KG announced today the start of the NORDIC ICD clinical trial. The first implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) patients were enrolled by its coordinating clinical investigator, Prof. Dr. Dietmar Bänsch at the University Hospital of Rostock and the investigator Dr. Stefan Kuster at the DRK Hospital of Mölln/Ratzeburg.

Discovery highlights unexpected role for killer protein in 'autophagy'

Tenet fourth quarter adjusted EBITDA increases 28.9% to $281 million

Tenet Healthcare Corporation today reported adjusted EBITDA of $281 million for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2010, an increase of $63 million, or 28.9 percent, compared to $218 million for the fourth quarter of 2009. Net income attributable to common shareholders for the fourth quarter of 2010 was $74 million, or $0.14 per diluted share, compared to $21 million, or $0.04 per diluted share, for the fourth quarter of 2009.

NASA astronauts onboard Space Shuttle Discovery's final mission to the International Space Station (ISS) will carry out the eleventh scientific payload for Astrogenetix, a commercial biotech company based out of Austin, Texas. The research on STS-133 will focus on changes that occur to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in microgravity, which can be targeted to create new vaccines and therapeutics.

Researchers explain genetic differences that distinguish early-transmitting HIVs-viruses

A new finding from scientists at the National Institutes of Health could help efforts to design vaccines and other prevention tools to block HIV in the early stages of sexual transmission, before infection takes hold. Researchers at the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases have helped explain genetic differences that can distinguish some early-transmitting HIVs-viruses found in an infected individual within the first month after infection-from forms of HIV isolated later in infection.

At the 3rd International Conference on innovative approaches in Head and Neck Oncology (ICHNO), Dr Hanna Rahbek Mortensen and colleagues at hospitals and institutes in Denmark presented results from a large prospective trial, the DAHANCA 6 & 7 study. The study, conducted across the country, investigated risk factors for developing dysphagia (swallowing dysfunction), after undergoing radiotherapy treatment for a head & neck cancer.
