Personal health records have great potential to help patients manage their health, but technology needs to be designed with the patient in mind - which means doing more than helping patients access health information, according to an editorial by two Virginia Commonwealth University family medicine physicians published in the Jan.19 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Novo Nordisk to appeal against ruling in repaglinide combination patent case

Today, Novo Nordisk announced that Judge Avern Cohn of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan issued an adverse ruling in a patent litigation case regarding Novo Nordisk's US Patent No. 6,677,358. The district court ruled that the patent, which covers the combination use of repaglinide and metformin for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, is invalid and unenforceable.

Finland begins implementation of European biomedical research infrastructures

Finland starts the implementation of European biomedical research infrastructures (BMS ESFRIs) by investing in a national effort called Biomedinfra - a joint effort linking to the EU level initiatives in developing biobanking (BBMRI), bioinformatics (ELIXIR), and translational research (EATRIS) infrastructures. This investment follows the 3-year pan-European planning phase, and a Finnish 2 M€ pilot project for Biomedinfra completed in 2010.
