State roundup: Wash. state to pay most of state worker premiums; Budget cuts and mental health in N.Y.; Idaho fraud

Gov. Chris Gregoire told state workers for months that they'd have to pay a bigger share of health-care costs — equal to 26 percent of their health-insurance premiums — because of a looming multibillion-dollar budget shortfall. That all changed when Gregoire's office agreed this week to have workers pay 15 percent of health-care premium costs, with the state picking up the other 85 percent in the next two-year budget (Garber, 12/3).

Frisky old men - still keen and active: Sex study

According to the latest Australian study, men at 75 and older have not said good bye to their sex lives yet. They found that nearly one third of these older men were sexually active at least once a year -- including about 1 in 10 men aged 90 to 95. Many of these men have agreed that they would want more of sex and those not sexually active are blaming health issues, low testosterone or lack of partners. The findings appear in the Dec. 7 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

One shot, cheap meningitis vaccine now available in Africa

As a boon to millions of children who die of meningitis, a cheap new vaccine for bacterial meningitis debuted today with the launching of an immunization drive in the West African country of Burkina Faso, in the first stage of an effort that could rid sub-Saharan Africa of the primary cause of meningitis, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced.

Cardiologist provided unnecessary stent implants: investigation

In a new investigation a Senate Finance Committee has found that a former cardiologist, Mark Midei at Towson, Md.-based St. Joseph Medical Center performed 585 medically unnecessary stent implants, costing Medicare and private insurers a combined $6.6 million in fraudulent reimbursement fees. These stents are special medicated or wire tubes that are placed inside coronary arteries of the heart to prevent them from collapsing or clogging up which may lead to a hear attack.

Lawmakers step in on airport X ray radiation exposure issue

In a bid to protect passengers from radiation exposure, members of Congress are calling on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to release inspection reports that would show whether airport X-ray machines that screen passengers and bags are meeting requirements to emit only low levels of radiation. There have been doubts in the recent past that the X-ray machines are not properly monitored and maintained and when the TSA refused to clarify, the lawmakers have stepped in.

Lesbian, gay and bisexual teens punished unfairly: Study

A new study says that lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) teens and young adults, especially females are punished more often by school and criminal authorities than are straight youngsters. According to Yale researchers Kathryn Himmelstein and Hanna Bruckner, this increased punishment is not always due to more rule-breaking or law-breaking. Ms. Himmelstein, now a high school math teacher in New York City, began the study after spending time working in the juvenile justice system during a leave of absence from college. She noted this trend during her tenure and started this work as her senior thesis at Yale.
