PAC points finger at British Labour party for health inequalities

The cross-party Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has criticised the British Labor party for allowing inequalities during its 13 years of power. The MPs said on the acute shortage of General Practitioners, “The Department of Health (DoH) should identify, as a matter of urgency, what measures it can take to drive up the numbers of GPs in deprived areas, including using direct financial incentives to encourage GPs into areas of greatest health need.” Tony Blair pledged to put reducing life expectancy differences at the heart of his policy after winning the general election in 1997.

Virus fighting just got a new boost

In a ground breaking study in the UK researchers have identified a previously unknown mechanism that allows the immune system to fight viruses even after they have infected cells. Until now it was believed that antibodies can act only before the virus enters the cells. The team now has found that antibodies that attached themselves to a virus were able to follow it into cells and help to destroy the virus before it started to reproduce. This could open up new avenues of therapy.

Icagen, Inc. today announced that it has been awarded approximately $733,000 of federal government grants under the qualifying therapeutic discovery project program under section 48D of the Internal Revenue Code. Optimer third quarter net loss increases to $11.8 million

Optimer Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today reported financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2010. Optimer reported a net loss for the third quarter of 2010 of $11.8 million, or $0.30 per share, which was in line with the Company's expectations. This compares to a net loss for the third quarter of 2009 of $9.4 million, or $0.28 per share.
