CDC study examines cost of medical care, productivity losses associated with motor vehicle injuries

In a one-year period, the cost of medical care and productivity losses associated with injuries from motor vehicle crashes exceeded $99 billion - with the cost of direct medical care accounting for $17 billion, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The total annual cost amounts to nearly $500 for each licensed driver in the United States, said the study in the journal Traffic Injury Prevention.

Momenta Pharmaceuticals provides update on generic Lovenox litigation

Momenta Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biotechnology company specializing in the characterization and engineering of complex drugs, today announced that on August 25, 2010, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia denied sanofi-aventis U.S. LLC's request for a preliminary injunction directing the FDA to suspend and withdraw its approval of the Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) filed by the Company's collaboration partner, Sandoz, for enoxaparin sodium injection USP, a generic version of Lovenox®. The decision is subject to appeal.

However, researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, Berlin, together with colleagues at Harvard University, reveal an opposite strategy used to ensure infection success. Pathogens can actually delay their entry into cells to ensure their survival.

Patterson first-quarter net income increases 20% to $53.93 million

Patterson Companies, Inc. today reported consolidated sales of $849,787,000 for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 ended July 31, an increase of 8% from $789,579,000 in the year-earlier quarter. Sales for the current quarter included the impact of an extra or fourteenth week, which will make fiscal 2011 a 53-week year ending on April 30, 2011. Net income of $53,925,000 or $0.45 per diluted share rose 20% from $45,057,000 or $0.38 per diluted share in the first quarter of fiscal 2010.

Affordable Care Act that mandates free preventative services goes into effect in September

Starting in September, President Obama's Affordable Care Act will go into effect. The act mandates free preventative services such as cholesterol or breast cancer screenings and tetanus shots. But the question is, will doctors and patients take advantage of these new preventative services? "Unfortunately, thanks to our American healthcare system, we have been programmed to focus on treatment and not prevention," said Dr. David Samadi, a urologic oncologist specializing in prostate cancer treatment and robotic surgery, who is also the Chief of Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
