AHRQ analysis finds hospital charges for patient stay averaged $18,000 per day

Hospital charges for the most expensive patient stays at U.S. hospitals in 2008 averaged about $18,000 per day, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. These patients were most likely to be in the hospital for treatment of septicemia, or blood infection, hardening of the arteries, and heart attacks.

FDA is releasing a redacted copy of a warning letter sent on October 15, 2010 to Mr. Austin J. DeCoster, owner of Quality Egg LLC of Galt, Iowa. Quality Egg LLC is one of two companies that recalled eggs in August 2010. Quality Egg LLC has not shipped eggs to the table market since the August recalls.

Fatalism may prevent women from Latin American descent Latinas from using cancer screening services, according to Karla Espinosa de los Monteros and Dr. Linda Gallo from San Diego State University in the US. Their review shows that women who are pessimistic about preventive health practices and disease outcomes are less likely to have been screened for cervical, breast and colorectal cancer. The research is published online in Springer's International Journal of Behavioral Medicine.

This year is the 50th anniversary of CPR.
