The importance of using the right tool – Deliberate deconvolution

Reputation is one of the most important factors in consulting laboratory businesses. Laboratories must be able to confidently and accurately produce results and education promptly and communicate them to clients to ensure their continued success.

Choosing the right tools

Ray Marsili, food flavor chemist and founder of Ray Marsili Consulting Group, has recognized that suitable instruments can distinguish between a laboratory’s success or struggle.

As Marsili’s team developed more sensitive extraction techniques for flood flavors and off-flavors, key challenges were uncovered. One of the main road bumps faced by the lab team was coelution. With the increasing number of successfully extracted compounds, more time was needed to tease apart the resulting peaks.

A more effective method to resolve coelutions was needed by the team. Research into technical solutions led Marsili’s team to LECO’s tools. Marsili noted that GC-MS instruments were used in relevant applications.

LECO’s Pegasus® series of highly-sensitive GC-MS instrumentation became a focus of Marsili’s research. Pegasus® possesses peak deconvolution capabilities, giving researchers the advantage of deliberate deconvolution.

At the time, LECO was a relative newcomer to the field of chromatography but already had an established reputation in the supply of reliable instruments and for service quality.

Marsili reached out to other LECO users. "Everyone was happy they purchased a LECO Pegasus GC-TOFMS or a BT GC-TOFMS," Marsili has said. Current users were happy to give him recommendations for LECO's instrument reliability, performance, and service.

Marsili purchased his first Pegasus in 2012 and has been a satisfied customer ever since. A key feature of the equipment that Marsili likes is the ChromaTOF® brand software, a comprehensive and helpful software suite that allows faster completion of projects than competitors.

With the help of Pegasus® instruments from LECO, Marsili Consulting Group improved detection of off-flavor chemicals in samples which had previously been elusive.

Detection sensitivity with the LECO BT is extraordinaryWe have been able to detect key malodor and off-flavor chemicals (e.g., geosmin) at extremely low concentrations that we could not achieve with other MS systems."

With confidence in the results, instrument reliability, as well as LECO's ability to quickly step up and help in the rare instances when something does go wrong, Marsili recommends working with LECO to anyone looking for better peak deconvolution or higher sensitivity.

About LECO Corporation

In 1936, the Laboratory Equipment Company introduced the first rapid carbon determinator to the American iron and steel industry. Today, 75 years later, LECO is recognized globally as a leader in innovative analytical instrumentation, mass spectrometers, metallography and optical equipment, and consumables.

LECO's broad selection of innovative instrumentation incorporates trendsetting automation, easy-to-use software, and the latest technologies into ergonomic designs. This results in instruments that are fast, accurate, and user-friendly—allowing you to increase productivity by achieving a level of throughput that was once unobtainable for many lab managers.

Our four diverse product lines offer you analytical solutions in five different market areas, meeting objectives for a wide variety of applications and scientific techniques. These market areas are described below.

Inorganic analysis

Determinators for carbon, sulfur, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen used for metal and inorganic analyses; glow discharge spectrometers for bulk and/or quantitative depth profile analysis.

Organic analysis

Determinators for carbon, sulfur, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen; analyzers for fat, protein, ash/moisture, mercury, and calorific value.

Microstructural analysis

Metallographic sample preparation equipment; macro and microindentation hardness testers; microscopes; image analysis and management systems; optical accessories.

Separation Science (GC-MS and GCxGC)

Nominal-mass and High-resolution Time-of-flight Mass Spectrometers powered by ChromaTOF software. Combined with a full range of optional sample introduction and GCxGC modulation capabilities, LECO instruments reveal new dimensions in GCMS data.

Ceramics

Crucibles, ladles, stopper rods, nozzles, kiln furniture, and pressed refractory shapes for the foundry and investment casting industry.
