Study finds that baclofen drug has potential to prevent cocaine relapse

Relapse is the most painful and expensive feature of drug addiction-even after addicted individuals have been drug-free for months or years, the likelihood of sliding back into the habit remains high. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that 40 to 60 percent of addicted individuals will relapse, and in some studies the rates are as high as 80 percent at six months after treatment.

Cedars-Sinai earns grant to conduct clinical trial of gene therapy product for patients with Lou Gehrig's disease

The Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine Institute has received a $2.5 million grant from the Department of Defense to conduct animal studies that, if successful, could provide the basis for a clinical trial of a gene therapy product for patients with Lou Gehrig's disease, also called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.

People with low and very high levels of transferrin saturation ratio are at increased risk of death

A new study led by researchers at the Graduate Entry Medical School, University of Limerick has found that people with low levels and very high levels of a commonly measured laboratory test, the “transferrin saturation ratio” are at an increased risk of death. The test is a measure of the amount of available iron in the bloodstream with low levels generally reflecting a state of iron deficiency and high levels suggesting a relative excess.

A research group at Uppsala University, Sweden has developed a new responsive coating for implants used in surgery to improve their integration into bone and to prevent rejection. Neutron scattering experiments at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France have shown how a protein that promotes bone growth binds to this surface and can be released in a controlled way.

Anacor Pharmaceuticals announced today that the first patient has been enrolled in the Phase 3 trial of AN2728, a novel boron-based phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE-4) inhibitor, for the topical treatment of mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic rash characterized by inflammation and itch and affects approximately 10% - 20% of infants and young children.
