Effects of UV radiation may increase chance of developing eye problems later in life

While 85 percent of Americans recognize that ultraviolet rays can damage their eyes, only 65 percent wear sunglasses as protection, and even fewer (39 percent) make sure their children wear sunglasses. By comparison, 78 percent make sure their children wear sunscreen when outdoors.

Jaume Pauné, a graduate of the Master's Degree in Optometry and Vision Sciences at the UPC-Barcelona Tech's College of Optics and Optometry, has designed an innovative new contact lens that will improve the vision quality of thousands of people without surgery. The Spanish Association of Opticians and Optometrists has granted its National Award to Mr. Pauné for his innovative work in this field.

Vision CRC scientists discover new technology to control myopia

Scientists from the Vision Cooperative Research Centre in Australia today announced that myopia, or short-sightedness, can be controlled with new technology. This ground breaking discovery was based on research conducted by Vision CRC partners - the University of Houston College of Optometry and the Brien Holden Vision Institute, located at the University of New South Wales.

Head trauma can cause loss of smell and taste sensations

The ability to taste and smell can be lost or impaired after a head injury, according to a new study by scientists from the Universit- de Montr-al, the Lucie Bruneau Rehabilitation Centre, as well as the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Rehabilitation of Greater Montreal. Published in the journal Brain Injury, the investigation established that mild to severe traumatic brain injury could cause olfactory loss.

USA Today: "Pharmacists, optometrists and groups representing an array of medical specialists boosted their political giving in 2009, as Congress worked on health care legislation that would dramatically reshape their industry. ... Donations by the top 15 health care political action committees rose to $11.7 million in 2009, a nearly 14% increase from 2007, the most recent non-election year, according to a USA TODAY analysis of data compiled by CQ MoneyLine."
