PTC Therapeutics, Inc. today announced the receipt of a $5.4 million Seeding Drug Discovery Award from The Wellcome Trust to support the development of drugs that target Bmi-1, a protein that has been linked to drug resistant cancers.

Viking Systems to demonstrate 3DHD visualization system at The European Congress of Laparoscopy and Robotics

Viking Systems, Inc. announced today that its prototype Next Generation 3DHD Visualization System including Sony's 3DHD display will be demonstrated at The European Congress of Laparoscopy and Robotics allowing attendees an opportunity to participate in an interactive demonstration of the system. This event will be held in Rome, Italy from June 10 through June 12, 2010.

Leonardo Biosystems receives $2.5M grant to accelerate commercialization of new technologies

Arrowhead Research Corporation announced today that its portfolio company, Leonardo Biosystems, has received a $2.5 million grant from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund, a state fund established to accelerate commercialization of new technologies. Leonardo Biosystems, co-founded by prominent nanoscientist Dr. Mauro Ferrari, professor at the University of Texas, and Arrowhead's, CEO Dr. Christopher Anzalone, is engineering a multi-stage drug delivery platform to improve the effectiveness of drug therapy, particularly for cancer.

SCCT names finalists of fourth annual Young Investigator Award

The Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, the leading international professional society dedicated to research, education and clinical excellence in cardiovascular computed tomography, has named the finalists of the fourth annual Young Investigator Award. Sponsored by Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. through an unrestricted educational grant, the Young Investigator Award will be awarded to two residents or fellows in either radiology or cardiology for their patient care research in the categories of technical and clinical advancement of cardiovascular CT.

Arrhythmia Alliance launches 'Know Your Pulse' global awareness campaign on World Heart Rhythm Week

Arrhythmia Alliance, the Heart Rhythm Charity, announced today the results of a survey conducted in Europe that showed a large number of respondents ignore basic measures to check for potential cardiac arrhythmias, or heart rhythm disorders. To raise awareness of the importance of pulse checking and to inform people about how to take their pulse, the Arrhythmia Alliance will open 2010 World Heart Rhythm Week (7-13 June) with the launch of the global awareness campaign 'Know Your Pulse'.

ASHP honors First DataBank pharmacist with the title of Fellow for excellence in pharmacy practice

First DataBank, a leading provider of drug databases that help drive patient safety, today announced that the American Association of Health-System Pharmacists will honor First DataBank pharmacist Joan Kapusnik-Uner, Pharm.D, with the title of "Fellow" in recognition of the excellence she has achieved in pharmacy practice. Chemotherapy delivered directly into liver blood vessels increases progression-free survival in melanoma patients

Patients undergoing treatment for melanoma that has spread to the liver may respond well to chemotherapy delivered directly into the liver's blood vessels, according to a study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and Delcath Systems Inc., and led by James F. Pingpank, M.D., associate professor of surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and surgical oncologist with UPMC Cancer Centers. The results will be disclosed in an oral presentation on June 5 in Chicago at the 46th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

MSKCC researchers study novel approach to treat metastatic melanoma

Physician-scientists at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center are studying a novel approach to treat metastatic melanoma, known as immunotherapy, which uses the body's own immune system to attack cancer. Presented today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting, encouraging new data shows - for the first time - a survival benefit in metastatic melanoma patients using an immunotherapy discovered and clinically investigated by researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.

MD Anderson-led Phase III clinical study determines Sprycel superior to Gleevec as front-line therapy

Dasatanib, a medication currently approved as treatment for drug-resistant chronic myeloid leukemia, provided patients with quicker, better responses as a first therapy than the existing front-line drug, according to researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking associated with teen migraines, TTH : Study

A novel study by German researchers reported that alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking were associated with increased migraines and tension-type headaches in high school students. Coffee drinking and physical inactivity were associated specifically with migraines. Results of this study, the first to investigate modifiable risk factors for different types of headaches in a youth population, appear online early in Headache, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the American Headache Society.

SOGC wants Canadian women to understand how sexual desire is more than just a feeling

Most Canadians would describe sexual desire as feelings of longing, craving, satisfying a sensuous appetite, or even the need for sensual indulgence. Today, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada wants to explain that desire is more than just a "feeling". The SOGC wants Canadian women to better understand the physical and psychosocial causes that may predispose to, precipitate or maintain a loss of desire.

Electrophoresis is used for RNA detection, quantification, purification by size and quality assessment. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has stopped a clinical trial evaluating a new approach to reduce the risk of recurrent stroke in children with sickle cell anemia and iron overload because of evidence that the new treatment was unlikely to prove better than the existing treatment.
