CPTC offers training program for firefighters to help reduce health-related deaths and injuries

Firefighter deaths due to heart attacks may not be due to bad diets, but from exposure to hydrogen cyanide in fire smoke. Nationally, six firefighters have literally dropped dead from heart attacks after coming off of a shift of smoky fires and more than 100 were treated or hospitalized for smoke inhalation since January 1.

Government's COE Program encourages research activities in universities across Japan: Study

Scopus- announced today that Kyoto University is employing the former's data and functions in a study performed by Dr. Takanori Ida, Professor at the Graduate School of Economics - Kyoto University. The study shows how effectively the government's large funding scheme, 21st Century Center of Excellence Program, encouraged research activities in universities across Japan.

Achieving remission in patients lessens burden of RA on societies with aging populations: Study

Achieving disease remission in patients with rheumatoid arthritis provides superior outcomes across measures of socio-economic importance including work productivity and quality of life according to results presented today at EULAR 2010, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Rome, Italy. These Austrian findings are reported in addition to improvements in measures of physical functioning, when compared with RA patients achieving low disease activity.

NLRB issues third strike against Sal Rosselli, other former SEIU-UHW officials

The National Labor Relations Board issued a third strike against Sal Rosselli, ousted president of the Service Employees International Union - United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW), and other former union officials who formed the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) after they were removed from office.

AORN supports Pennsylvania's signing of HB 1641 requiring perioperative RN during surgery

As advocates for patient safety in the operating room, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, (AORN), announced support for Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell's signing of HB 1641 requiring the presence of a circulating nurse in certain operating rooms. The bill, signed into law on June 16, applies to any hospital or class C ambulatory surgical facility.

Lightning Safety Awareness Campaign reduces death and injury from lightning strikes in the U.S.

This year marks the 10th Lightning Safety Awareness Campaign, June 20-26. Spearheaded by the National Weather Service, the campaign has reduced death and injury from lightning strikes in the U.S., with average annual deaths dropping from 72 to 40 in the last decade.

End Duchenne Day to be celebrated on June 26, 2010: PPMD

Patricia A. Furlong, Founding President and CEO of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, the largest non-profit organization in the United States focused on finding a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, announced that the Mayor of Denver, Colorado, John W. Hickenlooper, has proclaimed June 26, 2010 "End Duchenne Day" in recognition of PPMD's 16th Annual Connect Conference. Denver is playing host to the country's largest Duchenne-specific, international conference, June 24 – 27, 2010.

With "hands-on" experiences in childhood and adolescence having sparked so many science careers, scientists in Canada are describing a quick, simple, safe, and inexpensive way for kids to participate in making microfluidic devices. Those devices are at the heart of lab-on-a chip, inkjet printing, DNA chip, and other technologies.

NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia announces recruitment for clinical trial of robotic devices for stroke survivors

As many as half of stroke survivors lose some of their ability to move their extremities. Now specialists in rehabilitation medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center are pioneering the use of robotic devices to help them regain this function. Patients are currently being recruited for ongoing clinical research trials with the new devices.

MN HIE to conduct pilot project with Aging Services of Minnesota

The Minnesota Health Information Exchange (MN HIE) will conduct a pilot project with Aging Services of Minnesota at 12 of their member settings. This select group of care centers and assisted-living providers will use MN HIE's stand alone web services to view long term care patient's clinical information.

Disparity between rich, poor countries in access to biological treatments for RA

There is significant disparity between 'richer' and 'poorer' countries in terms of access to biological treatments for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), according to results from a multinational study across four continents presented today at EULAR 2010, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Rome, Italy. Furthermore, findings from a separate study show that RA patients report the severity of their disease in the same way, irrespective of the country where they live.

Data shows younger, unmarried men are least aware of hypertension

Younger, unmarried men around the world are least likely to be aware of hypertension (high blood pressure) and less likely to be receiving treatment. Whereas older women, are most aware of hypertension according to data presented today at the World Congress of Cardiology Scientific Sessions in Beijing, China.

AMLU, OPEIU partner with Ed Randall's Bat for the Cure to raise funds for fight against prostate cancer

The Association of Minor League Umpires and its parent organization, Office and Professional Employees International Union, have partnered with "Ed Randall's Bat for the Cure – Strike Out Prostate Cancer" to raise funds for the fight against prostate cancer. This Father's Day weekend, June 19-20, the minor league umpires open their personal checkbooks and donate 1 cent for every pitch thrown in their Minor League Baseball games.

CFIDS Association applauds AABB for responding to questions about safety of general blood supply

The CFIDS Association of America commends the AABB (formerly the American Association of Blood Banking) for its actions to protect the safety of the nation's blood supply by recommending that blood collectors actively discourage potential donors who have been diagnosed by a physician with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS, also known as chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome, or CFIDS) from donating blood through the use of donor information materials made available at the donation site.

Two researchers from the University of Santiago de Compostela have studied the relationship between teenagers' goals and antisocial behaviour. The results show that the principal goal of young people is to finish their studies and leave home. The most antisocial among them place greater importance on popularity with others.

Date set for Ryan Phua Memorial Kids' Ride, Burlingame Criterium

The 7th annual Ryan Phua Memorial Kids' Ride, featuring more than 700 kids of all ages, will once again provide one of the key highlights at the 24th annual Burlingame Criterium, set for Sunday, June 27, 2010. The race activities will fill the streets, restaurants and shops of downtown Burlingame with thousands of competitive cyclists, children, volunteers and spectators. Adding to the excitement of Ryan's Ride, the day's multiple races will culminate in a Men's pro event and a separate Women's pro event.
