ARS research physiologist develops preliminary model that predicts individual's vitamin D requirements

Your skin tone and the amount of sunshine you receive--in addition to what foods you eat--all can influence the amount of vitamin D that your body has on hand for optimum health. In a preliminary and apparently first-of-its-kind study, Agricultural Research Service research physiologist Charles B. Stephensen and colleagues have developed a preliminary model that predicts an individual's vitamin D requirements.

Big Brothers Big Sisters, AME Church partner to help children of single parents succeed

Two Philadelphia-based national organizations, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and the African Methodist Episcopal Church, are launching a landmark partnership aimed at helping children of single, low-income and incarcerated parents succeed. The Father's Day weekend announcement comes as Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the nation face waiting lists disproportionately represented by African American boys.

SAHM strongly recommends HPV vaccines for males

On May 28, 2010, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices published its guidance for use of the quadrivalent HPV vaccine in males. While noting that the vaccine was approved by the FDA for use in males ages 9 through 26 to reduce their likelihood of acquiring genital warts and that it therefore could be given for this purpose, the statement released by ACIP did not recommend routine HPV vaccination of males.

UNDP releases 8-pronged strategy to help developing countries meet MDGs

The U.N. Development Program (UNDP) on Thursday released a report (.pdf) outlining "an eight-pronged strategy it hopes can help poor nations advance sustainable development, considerably reduce poverty and essentially drive the attainment of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the next five years," BusinessDay reports (Nwachukwu, 6/18).

BioPharm Asia, Inc., a producer, distributor and retailer of medical products in China, today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, China Northern Pharmacy Holding Group Limited, has entered into an agreement to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Beijing Zhihe Ruikang Hospital Management Ltd., a professional Chinese hospital management consultation group, for a consideration of RMB2,400,000 (approximately $350,000).

Recommended supplementation not sufficient to normalise vitamin D levels in RA patients: Study

Two separate studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with a range of rheumatic diseases, with over half of all patients having below the 'normal' healthy levels of vitamin D (48-145 nmol/L) in their bodies. A further study assessing response to vitamin D supplementation found that taking the recommended daily dose did not normalise vitamin D levels in rheumatic disease patients.

Risk of MI increases six-fold in young women with RA: Study

Rheumatoid Arthritis patients face a two-fold increased risk of suffering a Myocardial Infarction (MI, heart attack) versus the general population, which is comparable to the increased risk of MI seen in diabetes patients, according to results of a new study presented today at EULAR 2010, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Rome, Italy.

Expression of BCRP in RA patients may indicate higher disease activity, predict resistance to DMARDs

The expression of a transporter protein called the Breast Cancer Resistance Protein in rheumatoid arthritis patients may indicate higher disease activity and could be a barrier to the effectiveness of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, according to the results of a study presented today at EULAR 2010, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Rome, Italy.

Interim epidemiological information on SLE patients in China presented at EULAR 2010

The Chinese Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Treatment and Research Group (CSTAR) announced interim epidemiological information on SLE patients in China today at EULAR 2010, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Rome, Italy. Robust data on SLE patients has been scarce to date; but now CSTAR provides the first online registry of this magnitude in China. To date the registry has collated data from 2,104 SLE patients across 30 Chinese provinces.

Researchers recommend involving teachers in nutrition education policy making

The Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act, 2004, requires that all school districts have a Wellness Policy if they participate in federal school meal programs. As part of the Wellness Policy, schools are mandated to include nutrition education activities which promote student wellness. A study in the July/August issue of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior evaluates elementary teachers' overall acceptance and implementation of nutrition competencies in the classroom as part of their School Wellness Policy.

Buruli ulcers, one of the 'neglected tropical diseases' left aside by big pharma and governments alike, are reasonably well treatable, also in poor regions. But then more attention has to be paid to early diagnosis and correct treatment. This means the rules of the World Health Organization urgently need to be changed. So say scientists of the Antwerp Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), based on ten years of research in Congo.

ASH selects 14 participants for 2010 MMSAP

The American Society of Hematology announces the selection of 14 participants for its 2010 Minority Medical Student Award Program, which encourages minority Medical students to purse an interest in hematology research. Award recipients will each receive the support of a research mentor and a career-development mentor, travel stipends to attend the ASH annual meeting, and a subscription to the scientific journal Blood, the official journal of ASH.
