New ways for earlier diagnosis of osteoarthritis

Researchers at King's College London's Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology, based at St Thomas' Hospital have discovered new ways of measuring biological markers in the blood which could be used to diagnose osteoarthritis earlier.

BTA Charitable Foundation to gift $1 million to Courage Centre at GRH

In a landmark giving announcement for the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation (GRHF), the Building Trades of Alberta (BTA) Charitable Foundation announced today that they will give $1 million to the Courage Centre at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (GRH). The Charitable Foundation is the beneficiary of the philanthropic efforts of the Building Trades of Alberta's 16 affiliated unions and 22 locals with a combined membership of over 60,000 unionized skilled trades people.

Researchers produce stem cells from eggs of aging mice for regenerative medicine

Researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center have created stem cells from the eggs of aging mice that could be used for reproductive purposes and regenerative medicine. The study, published in April issue of Aging Cell, found that even though the eggs from older females were slightly less efficient at making stem cells than those from younger females, the capacity to create stem cells was sustained.

Mayo Clinic study finds changes in tissue damage throughout the course of MS

A new Mayo Clinic study has found that the type of tissue damage changes throughout the course of multiple sclerosis. In early relapsing disease stages, the plaques, or areas where the nervous system is inflamed or demyelinated, are predominantly active with distinct heterogeneous patterns of myelin damage.

Boston Scientific Corporation today announced the launch of its new Kinetix™ Guidewire for use in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures. Guidewires are small flexible wires physicians use to deliver interventional devices such as drug-eluting stents. The Kinetix Guidewire features a unique micro-cut nitinol sleeve designed for significantly improved torque control compared to conventional spring coil guidewires.

Increase in mammographic density associated with increase of breast cancer in EPT study participants

An increase in breast density appears to be the culprit behind an increase of breast cancer found in women participating in the estrogen and progestin therapy study, a part of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). That is the finding of a new WHI analysis led by Celia Byrne, PhD, assistant professor at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, and presented during the AACR 101st Annual Meeting 2010 in Washington, DC.

ASTRO President Anthony Zietman, M.D., spoke before the Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee meeting today on radiation therapy for treatment of localized prostate cancer. MEDCAC provides advice and recommendations to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for what is covered by Medicare and Medicaid, based on scientific evidence.
