OXiGENE presents updated data from ZYBRESTAT Phase 2 study in NSCLC at 2010 ASCO

OXiGENE, Inc., a clinical-stage, biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapeutics to treat cancer and eye diseases, announced today that it presented updated safety and clinical activity data from the FALCON trial, a randomized, controlled Phase 2 study of ZYBRESTAT™ (CA4P) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

Phase II study results of pomalidomide, dexamethasone for multiple myeloma presented at ASCO

Celgene International Sàrl today announced results of a Phase II study of pomalidomide and dexamethasone in multiple myeloma patients who have failed both lenalidomide and bortezomib. Data were presented by Dr. Martha Lacy of the Mayo Clinic during the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting.

Selenium not beneficial in reducing risk of lung cancer development

Selenium, a supplement taken daily by millions in hopes of protection against cancer and a host of other diseases, has proven to be of no benefit in reducing a patient's risk of developing lung cancer - either a recurrence or second primary malignancy, according to results of an international Phase III clinical trial.

AVEO's initiation of SCH 900105 Phase 2 trial in non-small cell lung cancer triggers $8.5M milestone payment

AVEO Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing cancer therapeutics, today announced that it has initiated a Phase 2 clinical trial evaluating SCH 900105 (also referred to as AV-299) for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. The initiation of this trial triggers an $8.5 million milestone payment by Merck to AVEO resulting from a 2007 agreement between AVEO and Schering-Plough (now Merck).

Positive data on retreatment with brentuximab vedotin in Hodgkin lymphoma, ALCL presented at ASCO

Seattle Genetics, Inc. and Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, today reported data on Hodgkin lymphoma and systemic anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) patients retreated with single-agent brentuximab vedotin (SGN-35). Preliminary data demonstrate that objective responses were achieved in seven out of 11 retreatment experiences and that brentuximab vedotin was well-tolerated in the retreatment setting.

ArQule, Daiichi Sankyo present positive data from Phase 2 combination ARQ 197 trial for lung cancer at ASCO

ArQule, Inc. and Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd. today announced the presentation of data from a Phase 2 clinical trial at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) showing encouraging overall survival (OS) results with ARQ 197 in combination with erlotinib among patients with advanced, refractory non-small cell lung cancer.

ZymoGenetics' IL-21 Phase 2 clinical trial in metastatic melanoma meets primary endpoint

ZymoGenetics, Inc. today announced positive results from a Phase 2 clinical trial in metastatic melanoma with recombinant Interleukin 21 (IL-21) as a single agent. The trial met the primary endpoint of efficacy, as measured by objective response rate or lack of early disease progression. Overall response rate was 23.1%, in evaluable patients, and median progression-free survival was 4.3 months. The results were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting.

Celldex Therapeutics reports mature data from CDX-011 Phase 1/2 study in advanced breast cancer

Celldex Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that mature results from a Phase 1/2 study evaluating CDX-011 in advanced stage breast cancer patients were presented at the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). CDX-011 is an experimental antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) directed against glycoprotein NMB (GPNMB) and linked to a potent cancer cell-killing drug, monomethyl-auristatin E (MMAE).

Positive results from new analyses of denosumab Phase 3 trials

Amgen today announced positive results from several new analyses of two Phase 3 trials studying denosumab compared with Zometa® (zoledronic acid), the current standard of care, for the treatment of bone metastases in patients with advanced breast cancer ("136 study") and solid tumors or multiple myeloma ("244 study"). Results from these trials reinforce denosumab's consistent ability to delay the complications of bone metastases in patients with advanced cancer. These results are being presented during the 2010 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting in Chicago.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has stopped a clinical trial evaluating a new approach to reduce the risk of recurrent stroke in children with sickle cell anemia and iron overload because of evidence that the new treatment was unlikely to prove better than the existing treatment.

With the rapid and continuous advances in biotechnology, scientists are better able to see inside the nucleus of a cell to unlock the secrets of its genetic material. However, what happens outside of the nucleus has, in many ways, remained a mystery. Now, researchers with the National Institutes of Health are closer to understanding how activity outside of the nucleus determines a cell's behavior.

High IL-10 levels in tumor cells may decrease effectiveness of autologous melanoma vaccine: Study

Scientists from the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson have found that interleukin-10 production in tumor cells is a possible prognostic factor in patients with advanced melanoma who are treated with autologous melanoma cell vaccine. They are presenting their data at the 2010 ASCO Annual Meeting in Chicago (Abstract #8588).

Fox Chase Cancer Center announces first-in-human bi-specific HER2/HER3 pathway targeting antibody

Patients with HER2-positive cancers can have dramatic responses to HER2-targeted drugs but eventually develop resistance to the agents. With that problem in mind, Fox Chase Cancer Center researchers are testing a novel type of antibody called MM-111 in patients with HER2-positive disease who have progressed on standard therapy.
