A biomarker is a biological molecule found in blood, other body fluids, or tissues that is a sign of a normal or abnormal process, or of a condition or disease. A biomarker may be used to see how well the body responds to a treatment for a disease or condition. Also called molecular marker and signature molecule.

Pressure BioSciences collaborates with LBNL to analyze microbe for oil spill clean-up

Pressure BioSciences, Inc. today announced a collaboration with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory ("LBNL"). Brain trauma in sports associated with motor neuron disease, researchers find

The Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University School of Medicine and Department of Veterans Affairs announced today that they have provided the first pathological evidence that repetitive head trauma experienced in collision sports is associated with motor neuron disease, a neurological condition that affects voluntary muscle movements.

Chronix Biomedical expands biomarker development capabilities with installation of DNA mass sequencer

Chronix Biomedical today reported that it has significantly expanded and accelerated its biomarker development capabilities with the installation of Germany's first state-of-the-art high-throughput DNA mass sequencer at the University of Göttingen, Chronix's long-time collaborator. Chronix is developing disease-specific biomarkers based on DNA fragments that are released into the bloodstream by damaged and dying (apoptotic) cells.

The boom in cancer biomarker investments over the past 25 years has not translated into major clinical success. The reasons for biomarker failures include problems with study design and interpretation, as well as statistical deficiencies, according to an article published online August 12 in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

VirtualScopics second-quarter revenues increase 27% to $3.22 million

VirtualScopics, Inc., a leading provider of quantitative imaging for clinical trials, today reported revenues of $3,221,593 for the second quarter of 2010 compared to revenues of $2,541,316 in the second quarter of 2009, a 27% increase. Excluding work performed in 2009 for the Department of Defense under projects that ended in 2009, the company posted a 34% increase in second quarter 2010 revenues as compared to the second quarter of 2009 and a 45% increase in revenues during the first half of 2010 compared to the first half of 2009.

AVEO achieves enrollment target for tivozanib global Phase 3 clinical trial in advanced renal cell carcinoma

AVEO Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing cancer therapeutics, today announced that it has achieved its enrollment target for TIVO-1, its global Phase 3 clinical trial for its oral, triple VEGF receptor inhibitor, tivozanib, in patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma. Study shows physicians reluctant to use finasteride for prostate cancer

Despite the dramatic results of the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT), which showed a significant reduction in prostate cancer among those taking finasteride, physicians have not increased its use, according to a study published in the September issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Elan and Transition Therapeutics report results of ELND005 Phase 2 study for Alzheimer's disease

Elan Corporation, plc and Transition Therapeutics, Inc today announced the results of a Phase 2 placebo-controlled study in 351 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease who received study drug for up to 18 months (Study AD201). Study subjects with MMSE scores between 16 and 26 received ELND005 oral doses of 250 mg, 1000 mg or 2000 mg twice daily or matching placebo. The study's cognitive (NTB) and functional (ADCS-ADL) co - primary endpoints did not achieve statistical significance.

Alzheimer’s disease can now be predicted with 100% accuracy: Study

In a new development, Alzheimer's disease can now be predicted with up to 100 percent accuracy several years before its onset using three special marker proteins present in the spinal fluids. The study was published in the American Medical Association's Archives of Neurology.
