Tympanostomy tubes have no long-term benefits for childhood ear infections

There is no long-term benefit to surgically placing tympanostomy tubes in a young child's ears to reduce the rate of recurrent ear infections during the ensuing two years compared with giving oral antibiotics to treat ear infections, a randomized trial led by UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and University of Pittsburgh pediatrician-scientists determined.

Johnson & Johnson announces FDA clearance to expand indication for Acclarent AERA device

Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies today announced that Acclarent, Inc., a leader in developing minimally-invasive Ear, Nose & Throat technologies, has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to expand the indication for the Acclarent AERA® Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation System to include its use in patients as young as 18. The device was previously cleared only for adults aged 22 and older.

Severe plagiocephaly in babies can lead to ear infections

The recommendation to lay babies on their backs to sleep has reduced sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), but has led to an increased number of infants with a skull deformity called deformational (or positional) plagiocephaly.
