Safety rules lag in biotech industry

The New York Times reports that safety rules for biotechnology workers sometimes expose them to dangerous pathogens. "Whether handling deadly pathogens for biowarfare research, harnessing viruses to do humankind's bidding or genetically transforming cells to give them powers not found in nature, the estimated 232,000 employees in the nation's most sophisticated biotechnology labs work amid imponderable hazards. And some critics say the modern biolab often has fewer federal safety regulations than a typical blue-collar factory."

Sutter General performs first hip replacement with ROBODOC Surgical System after FDA clearance

Eighteen years ago, orthopedic surgeon William Bargar, M.D. made history when, at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento, he performed the first-ever hip replacement using a robotic device he developed called ROBODOC®, which improves precision in joint replacement surgery. Warren Roberts of Davis was among Dr. Bargar's first patients; in 1995, he underwent replacement of his left hip as a part of an FDA study using ROBODOC®.

MU awarded $6.8M to help patients benefit from use of health information technology

Now, the University of Missouri has a two-year, $6.8 million cooperative agreement to help patients throughout the state benefit from increased use of this health information technology.

USHIFU, LLC (US HIFU), a world leader in minimally invasive high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) technologies and manufacturer of the Sonablate® 500 (Sonablate) medical device, announces the acquisition of certain Misonix HIFU assets and European distribution rights. Authentidate Holding Corp., a worldwide provider of secure health information exchange, workflow management services and telehealth solutions, today announced that it received a deficiency notification from the Nasdaq Stock Market dated May 26, 2010 as the result of Authentidate not complying with the $1 minimum closing bid price requirement of Nasdaq Listing Rule 5550(a)(2) during the consecutive 30 business day period from April 13, 2010 through May 25, 2010. This notification has no effect on the listing of the company's common stock at this time.

A published report provides the final details on how two stroke-prevention procedures are safe and equally beneficial for men and women at risk for stroke, though their effectiveness does vary by age, say researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health in collaboration with other North American stroke investigators.

Novel imaging system helps visualize and monitor cellular immune responses of transplanted tissue in real time

A group of "color-coded" laboratory mice are providing researchers with a novel way of tracking T-cells, enabling them to visualize and monitor the cellular immune responses of transplanted tissue in real time. The new imaging system is described in the June issue of Nature Medicine, which appears on-line this week.

The median age of camp fire victims is two years old and many injuries happen long after the fire is thought to be extinguished. Experts say most of the incidents are predictable and preventable.

Effective infant vaccination against pneumonia needed in sub-Saharan Africa

Researchers at the University of Warwick, and the Kenya Medical Research Institute, Kilifi, Kenya, have found that respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) appears to be the predominant virus detected among infants and children hospitalized in Kenya with severe pneumonia, according to a study in the May 26 issue of JAMA. The contribution to this severe disease by an individual pathogen stresses the need for effective infant vaccination.
