Pathology is the study and diagnosis of disease through examination of organs, tissues, bodily fluids, and whole bodies (autopsies). The term also encompasses the related scientific study of disease processes, called General pathology. Medical pathology is divided in two main branches, Anatomical pathology and Clinical pathology. Veterinary pathology is concerned with animal disease whereas Phytopathology is the study of plant diseases.

Two researchers awarded grants to develop indicators, biomarkers for dementia with Lewy bodies

The Lewy Body Dementia Association and the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation have awarded $100,000 each to Omar El-Agnaf, PhD, of United Arab Amirates University and Michelle Mielke, PhD, of Mayo Clinic Rochester to provide one year of support for their research projects focused on developing indicators, or biomarkers, for dementia with Lewy bodies.

More than 50,000 stem cell transplants are performed each year worldwide. A research team led by Weill Cornell Medical College investigators may have solved a major issue of expanding adult hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) outside the human body for clinical use in bone marrow transplantation -- a critical step towards producing a large supply of blood stem cells needed to restore a healthy blood system.
