FIWE devices are used for crude fiber analysis and detergent fiber extraction following official standard methods. These fiber analyzers operate with pre-heated reagents to perform fiber testing using the Weende, Van Soest, and other established procedures.
Vegetables and their derivatives contain components from several categories:
- Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and mineral salts
- A non-digestible fraction made of polymers (lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin), referred to as fiber
- Nutritional relevance: Excess fiber may lead to digestive discomfort
- Insufficient fiber intake can disrupt normal digestive function
- Most regulatory authorities require that fiber content be included in the nutritional labeling of food and feed products
The Weende Method: One of the oldest analytical techniques still in use today, measuring fiber as crude fiber (CF)
Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) Method: Developed by Van Soest, the most commonly used method for fiber measurement in animal feed
High performance
- Reliable results
- High reproducibility
- Rapid analysis: 2 hours vs. 6 hours for manual systems
- Back-pressure pump prevents crucible clogging
Versatile
- Extraction of raw fiber using the Weende method
- Neutral and acid detergent fiber using NDF, ADF, and Van Soest methods
- Acid detergent lignin (ADL) extraction with Van Soest methods
- Fiber fraction analysis: cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin
- Combines boiling, rinsing, and filtration steps
- Processes single or multiple samples
Full system
- Reagent preheating with RC 2 hotplate (included)
- Same crucibles used for weighing, drying, and washing to prevent loss
Recommendations
- Use with COEX for cold extraction prior to fiber analysis
