Amphibian skin secretions can reveal amazing medicinal properties

Frogs place in culture ranges from the wise, to the prince in disguise. But it's the idea that a frog can produce life-saving medicine that's currently the subject of an international research project involving Professor Chris Shaw and colleagues at Queen's University Belfast, in Northern Ireland. They have discovered proteins in frog skins that could be used to treat cancer, diabetes, strokes and transplant patients by regulating the growth of blood vessels.

Biotage net sales increase 12% to 205.8 MSEK for January - June 2011

Biotage: Interim report January - June 2011. Group net sales amounted to 98.6 MSEK (103.5) in the second quarter and to 205.8 MSEK (203.4) in the period January - June. At comparable exchange rates net sales increased by 8 percent in the quarter and by 12 percent the first six months.

Bayer Healthcare to provide over 600,000 moxifloxacin tablets to fight MDR-TB in China

Bayer Healthcare announced on Monday it "has agreed to support the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Stop TB Partnership in the fight against multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) by making 620,000 tablets of the antibiotic moxifloxacin available to WHO," according to a Bayer press release.

Global AIDS funding in 2010 down nearly 10% from previous year, Kaiser/UNAIDS report says

"Spending on the global fight against AIDS fell significantly in 2010 for the first time since the U.S. and other governments began making major donations," according to an annual funding analysis released Monday by the Kaiser Family Foundation and UNAIDS, the Wall Street Journal reports. "All told, governments donated about $6.9 billion in 2010, down 9.7 percent from about $7.6 billion in the prior year, the report said," the newspaper writes.

New research: Blood stem cells can be involved in pathogenesis of CLL

New research suggests that blood stem cells can be involved in the generation of leukemia, even when the leukemia is caused by the abnormal proliferation of mature cells. The study, published by Cell Press in the August 16th issue of the journal Cancer Cell, may guide future strategies aimed at identifying therapeutic targets for chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
