VA announces first Ai2 awards under Industry Innovation Competition

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki officially announced today the first VA Innovation Initiative awards under the agency's Industry Innovation Competition, its third competition since it began in early 2010. These four projects will use innovative new technologies in VA facilities to improve the quality of patient care for Veterans. They represent the first of nearly two-dozen more awards to be made in the coming months.

Mayo Clinic researchers have concluded that, through deep brain stimulation, a Wireless Instantaneous Neurotransmitter Concentration System can detect and measure serotonin levels in the brain. The findings suggest that in the future such measurements of serotonin may help establish a therapeutic mechanism of deep brain stimulation for psychiatric disease.

One in four Spanish drivers has a vision problem that affects their driving ability. This is the finding of a study commissioned by the association Visión y Vida in collaboration with the RACC to Aurora Torrents and Jaume Escofet, professors at EUOOT. The aim of the study is to provide objective information on the eyesight of Spanish drivers.

A cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment, which commonly includes chemotherapy or radiation, can be taxing physically and emotionally on any patient. If that is not enough, dermatologists are cautioning patients receiving cancer treatment and cancer survivors that they may experience a host of skin, hair or nail problems as a direct result of their therapy that may require additional treatment by a dermatologist.
